Database from 2022 as a benchmark
Google analyzed 2022 traffic data around the holidays to find out what traffic levels might be like for Christmas 2023. This will help avoid traffic jams during the holidays. So that you can reach your loved ones quickly and without unnecessary delays (assuming there are no unusual weather events such as heavy snow or freezing rain). Whether and how the GDL train drivers’ union will strike around the holidays is apparently still an open question. Not even Google knows that.
Google also examined when stores were busy around Christmas 2022. This information is important for anyone planning to shop just before Christmas 2023 or between the holidays.
Based on Google Maps data on traffic volume around the holidays in 2022, Google makes the following recommendations for 2023:
On the road: This is what drivers should know
- 23rd of December: The busiest time is in the afternoon between 3 and 4 p.m. and in the evening between 7 and 9 p.m. The quietest time is before 5 a.m.
- 24th of December: The busiest time is between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., the quietest time is before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m.
- 25 December: The busiest time is in the afternoon from 3 to 4 p.m., the quietest time is before 9 a.m. or after 9 p.m.
- December 26th: The busiest time is between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., the quietest time is before 7 a.m. or after 10 p.m.
In shops:
- In the supermarkets is busiest on Saturdays at 12 p.m. and least busy on Tuesdays at 5 p.m.
- In shopping centers is busiest on Saturdays at 1 p.m. and least busy on Mondays at 3 p.m.
- In post offices is busiest on Mondays at 4 p.m. and least busy on Tuesdays at 1 p.m.
