Google Drive has been losing new files for some users since May

The cloud, the seemingly safe virtual space where we store our files, is the epicenter of concern for Google Drive users. Recent reports of mysterious file disappearances have caused concern among users, with some reporting a loss of work of six months or more.

The problem arose a few days ago when users encountered a version that reverted to May 2023 when logging into Google Drive. According to witness statements Almost everything that has been rescued since then has disappeared and attempts at recovery have failed.

Several users share similar experiences, with one claiming that six months of business data simply disappeared.

So far there is little information about what happened. Some users reported that syncing simply stopped working and the cloud was out of date. Others managed to recover some of their information by manipulating cache files. However, those affected have been advised to leave things as they are until engineers find a solution.

A purported support message from Google also advised against making any changes to the root/data folder while engineers investigate the issue.

For affected users, this experience is a reminder that Although the files are stored in the cloud, there is no absolute guarantee of security. Cloud service providers such as OVH in Europe suffered a devastating fire in 2021, leaving some customers without a website or backup to restore from.

Recently it was reported that a user, MatthewSt, found a solution. However, caution is advised as this is not an official solution.
