Google Announces Minimum RAM and Storage Requirements for Android 15 Devices

Android 15 is rolling out to more devices, and it’s bringing new requirements with it. Google says devices need at least 32GB of storage to run Android 15. That’s double the minimum storage needed for Android 13. The extra space is for pre-installed system apps, system data, and user files. In fact, 75% of a 32GB storage device will be used for these things.

Here’s how Android’s storage requirements have changed:

  • Android 12: 8GB minimum
  • Android 13: 16GB minimum
  • Android 14: 16GB minimum
  • Android 15: 32GB minimum

Not many new smartphones or tablets come with 16GB or 32GB of storage these days. This means some older devices won’t be able to upgrade to Android 15.

RAM is also important for running Android 15 smoothly. Devices need at least 4GB of RAM to support Google Mobile Services (GMS) and run the operating system well. Devices with 2GB or 3GB of RAM will have to use Android Go Edition, a version designed for lower-end devices. Google is already testing Android 16, which will require at least 6GB of RAM.

Android 15 also brings new features to protect user privacy. Users can now choose whether to share their emergency contact information with emergency location services during emergency calls. Any sharing of this data requires user consent.
