The fragmentation of alternatives in the smartwatch business versus Apple’s options is real. And in May of this year, Google and Samsung teamed up to try to alleviate this problem.
It was during Google I / O 2021 when the partnership between the two tech giants was announced, which led to the passage of this operating system to the latest Samsung smartwatches.
Galaxy Watch 4 were the first products to result from these attempts. And based on Counterpoint Research data for the mobile device market in Q3 2021, the partnership is working.
Wear OS gains 17% market share in Q3 2021
As you read, the Wear OS market grew up to 17% during this period. To be a notion, before it only had 4%. And the Galaxy Watch 4 is largely responsible, as it had strong sales.
It turns out that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 accounted for about 60% of smartwatch shipments during the third quarter of 2021 in Europe and North America. In the opposite direction, Apple saw a drop in this market due to the postponement of the Apple Watch Series 7.

“Building on this series of smart watches, Samsung has expanded its application ecosystem by using Android-based Wear OS instead of its Tizen. The brand also expanded the range of options for users by launching two models: basic and classic. The newly added body composition function also got a good response, ”the study concludes.
