Microsoft it was announced brief The Windows Cortana standalone app will no longer be supported.

Cortana provides voice assistance for a wide range of tasks, such as setting reminders, creating calendar events, providing the weather, and searching the Internet.

Initially introduced as part of the now defunct Windows Phone, Cortana has since expanded to other platforms including Windows 10, Android and iOS. It is now deeply integrated into the Microsoft ecosystem and is designed to work closely with other Microsoft products.

According to a supporting document published on Wednesday, Cortana will be retired at the end of 2023, 8 years after it was included in Windows 10 in 2015.

Starting in late 2023, we will no longer support Cortana on Windows as a standalone app. However, you will still be able to access powerful productivity features in Windows and Edge, which have greater AI capabilities.

This change only affects Cortana on Windows, and your productivity assistant, Cortana, will continue to be available in Outlook mobile, Teams mobile, Microsoft Teams Canvas, and Microsoft Teams Rooms.

Cortana’s place as Windows’ digital assistant has already been taken by Windows Copilot, powered by AI and presented last week during the Build conference. Windows Copilot will enter the preview phase of Windows 11 starting in June.

Microsoft hints at some recently released products that replace Cortana, such as voice access in Windows 11 to control your PC with your voice, the new AI-powered Bing search engine, and the Microsoft 365 Copilot AI productivity tool.
