Giolito and Sheets lead the White Sox to victory over the Orioles

Lucas Giolito pitched impressively into the seventh inning, Gavin Sheets answered twice with the bases loaded and Yoán Moncada had a stupendous double play as the Chicago White Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 on Wednesday.

Giolito (10-7) allowed one run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings. He bounced back from last week’s performance, in which he allowed seven runs in three innings against Houston.

Kendall Graveman was helped out of a jam with the house full in the seventh inning, thanks to the intervention of Cuban Moncada at third base.

With the bases loaded, one out, and Chicago up 3-1, Jorge Mateo grounded directly to third base. Moncada reached right to catch the ball, and as he did so, he touched base with his bare hand.

He then threw to first to complete the double play.

Sheets drove in three runs for Chicago, which trailed four games behind AL Central leader Cleveland. The Orioles remained 2 1/2 games short of the last wild-card spot in the playoffs.

The loss went to Spenser Watkins (4-4).

For the White Sox, the Cubans Luis Robert 4-1 with a run scored, José Abreu 4-2, Moncada 5-0. Venezuelan Elvis Andrus 4-1 with a run scored.

For the Orioles, Venezuelan Anthony Santander 4-0, Rougned Odor 3-0, Robinson Chirinos 2-0. The Mexican Ramón Urías 3-0. The Dominican Mateo 3-0.
