Gesink renews with Jumbo-Visma and will hang up the bike in 2024

Dutchman Robert Gesink has extended his contract with Jumbo-Visma until the end of 2024, at which point he will end his long career as a professional cyclist.

Gesink, 37, has stage victories in the Vuelta a España, Switzerland or Belgium to his wide recordas well as victories in the Tour of Oman, the Giro d’Emilia, Lombard Week or in classics such as the Quebec or Montreal Grand Prix, among others.

“I am looking forward to continuing with this team for another year. The motivation is still great and I’m enjoying it here. In December, I agreed with the team that we would discuss a possible retirement from cycling after the Giro. I am grateful that the team management has left the decision entirely in my hands”, explained the Dutch climber.

He admitted that his career “has been a roller coaster” in which he has “seen the good and the bad of cycling” and assured that he likes to share his experiences with the youth of the team.

Merijn Zeeman, sports director of Jumbo-Visma, highlighted that Gesink is “an icon” for the squad: “He has been a pillar for many years. Extending his contract was a logical decision for us and, fortunately, he shared this opinion.
