Germany: Syrian court sentences Syrian colonel to life in prison

A German court has sentenced a former Syrian colonel to life in prison.

According to a foreign news agency, a local court in the German city of Koblenz sentenced Anwar Ruslan to life in prison in Damascus for crimes against humanity.

A state court in Koblenz on Thursday handed down a landmark ruling, saying it was the first step towards justice for the countless Syrians who had been abused by President Bashar al-Assad’s government during the years-long war.

The Koblenz court said in a press release that the prisoner was sentenced to life in prison for murder, torture, severe deprivation of liberty, rape and rape.

It is worth mentioning that this was the first criminal case in the world to be brought against the state-led violence in Syria and Ruslan, 58, is the highest-ranking former government official to be tried for atrocities there.

During the hearing, prosecutors said Ruslan subjected more than 4,000 people to “brutal torture under planning” at the Al-Khatib prison in the Syrian capital between April 2011 and September 2012, killing at least 58 people. ۔

The prosecution also said the perpetrator was raped and sexually assaulted in prison, “struck with electric shocks, wires and whips, and deprived people of sleep.”

It should be noted that the decision of the case by the court came almost a year later, in which the Syrian colonel was sentenced to four and a half years in prison.

Like Anwar Ruslan, he arrived in Germany as an asylum seeker and was arrested in 2019.
