Germany names Russia as “the greatest threat to peace” in its new security strategy

Berlin (BLAZETRENDS).- Russia is “the greatest threat to peace and security in the Euro-Atlantic area”, according to the formal declaration of the German government, which on Tuesday approved its new national security strategy.

“The war of attack against Ukraine is a radical break with the Charter of the United Nations and with the European security order based on cooperation,” according to that document, which was presented in Berlin by Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

“The cabinet today has made an important and extraordinary decision. For the first time in the country’s history we have a national security strategy,” Scholz told the press at the presentation of the document.

Germany’s main allies

In the German security strategy it is insisted that with the breakdown of the European peace order “Russia directly threatens our security and that of our allies in NATO and in the EU”.

“Neither Germany nor NATO seek opposition or confrontation with Russia. However, in the alliance we are always willing and able to defend our sovereignty and freedom and that of our allies,” the document states.

Scholz summarized that the German national security strategy is based on the identity of Germany “anchored in the European Union, in the transatlantic alliance, friendship with France and “close cooperation with the United States.”

In addition, the foreign minister confirmed that the country’s objective is to reach 2% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in defense spending.

the role of china

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said for her part in relation to the Russian invasion of Ukraine that “peace and freedom do not fall from heaven. On February 24, 2022, it became clear what many neighbors in Eastern Europe had warned us, that Europe is also vulnerable.

The German security strategy also qualifies as a “systemic partner, competitor and rival” and notes that in recent years the presence of “elements of rivalry and competition” has increased.

“China tries in various ways to change the current international order based on the rules, increasingly claims a position of power in an increasingly offensive way and always tries to do so in opposition to our values and interests,” the document states.

Finance Minister Christian Lindner, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius also participated in the presentation to the press of the national security strategy.
