Geny Catamo Scores Mozambique’s First Goal vs Somalia, World Cup Hopes Dashed

Mozambique’s national football team, already eliminated from 2026 World Cup contention, took an early lead against Somalia in a qualifying match held in Oran, Algeria.

Geny Catamo, a midfielder for Portuguese club Sporting CP, netted the opening goal just six minutes into the game.

Catamo capitalized on a precise pass from Bruno Langa, slotting a left-footed shot past a poorly positioned Somalian goalkeeper.

Despite their inability to advance to the World Cup finals, coach Chiquinho Conde deployed a full-strength lineup, fulfilling a prior commitment to use his best squad.

The “Mambas,” as Mozambique’s national team is known, are completing their World Cup qualification campaign in the neutral venue of Oran.
