Genk coach Thorsten Fink has declared Portuguese side Sporting Braga as clear favorites for their upcoming UEFA Europa League encounter, citing their strong group stage performance and home advantage.
Fink described Braga as “a great team that practices good football,” noting their significant ball possession even in a recent match against FC Porto. He emphasized that the upcoming game “will be difficult for us” and will require “a high-level performance to take anything from the game.”
Braga currently leads their Europa League group with nine points from three matches. Fink pointed to this impressive record, stating, “few teams achieve [nine points] in three games.” He also highlighted their home field advantage as a key factor.
The Genk coach acknowledged Braga’s strong roster, mentioning midfielder Grillitsch, defender Arrey-Mbi, and striker Fran Navarro by name, alongside their robust midfield. He noted that Braga might rotate their squad given their demanding schedule, which includes another match on Sunday.
For Genk, Fink’s immediate task is to select players best suited for the match while also managing the squad’s energy for their own complicated Sunday fixture. He expressed satisfaction with the team’s participation in European competition, calling it a valuable experience for younger players.
Genk central defender Matte Smets echoed the team’s motivation, stating that all players are eager for the challenge. He noted the team’s recent defensive improvements, including several clean sheets, and their desire to continue that momentum.
Smets, who has not previously faced a Portuguese team, acknowledged Braga’s quality after reviewing their past matches. He affirmed that Genk aims to “show our virtues” and “play as we want” in the Europa League.
Reflecting on Genk’s season, Smets admitted that “many things didn’t go well at the beginning.” However, he said the team has since found its footing, is “more confident,” and is now enjoying their style of play.
