Gen. Randy George ousted as Hegseth demands resignation amid expanding Iran war

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George to step down immediately. The sudden military ouster unfolds as the U.S. rapidly expands its escalating war with Iran, prompting the administration to demand absolute ideological alignment across its top command structure.

The dismissal of the top Army general broke late Thursday. It happened concurrently with President Donald Trump firing Attorney General Pam Bondi over her department’s handling of Epstein documents, according to late-night administration updates.

Gen. George was confirmed in 2023. His four-year term was expected to run through 2027. He previously worked as the senior military assistant to former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

A senior Defense Department official stated Hegseth is actively seeking new leadership to faithfully implement the president’s specific vision for the Army.

The Pentagon is currently pressing Congress for $200 billion in additional war funding. Hegseth recently confirmed the U.S. has hit over 7,000 targets across Iran since the conflict began. Todd Blanche took over as Acting Attorney General following Bondi’s swift exit.

This rapid turnover in defense leadership forcefully alters military logistics across the world stage.

How Gen. George’s Exit Accelerates the Pentagon Power Vacuum

Hegseth has actively removed or sidelined over a dozen top-ranking military commanders. This wartime purge includes the heads of the Air Force, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and U.S. Cyber Command.

The removal of Gen. George officially dismantles the highest levels of the command structure established under the prior administration. Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Christopher LaNeve is heavily favored to fill the newly created vacuum.

The speed of these dismissals forces a massive operational shift at the Pentagon. The administration is clearing out legacy commanders and restructuring military leadership while actively managing a major overseas conflict.
