Gemma Jones reveals dark side of being ring girl in brutal fights

Gemma Jones, a well-known ‘ring girl,’ has participated in over 700 events throughout her seven-year career. She recently shared her thoughts on the profession, stating, “I love my ‘ring girl’ work and I don’t think it’s exploitation at all.” As a 37-year-old model, Jones charges around 600 euros for her appearances at boxing, MMA, wrestling, cage fighting, and boxing without gloves events.

Some boxers are pleasant to work with, while others can be arrogant, according to Jones. She noted, “Some boxers are lovely, others think they are a gift from God for women and are very arrogant.” Jones also mentioned that some boxers refrain from interacting with her due to religious reasons, which she respects. In an interview with Mel Fallowfield, Jones explained that she prioritizes her safety and will not engage with boxers who have a bad reputation.

Jones appreciates the consideration given to her well-being, such as not being allowed to wear high heels to prevent damaging the ring canvas. She said, “I appreciate that we are not allowed to wear needle heels; there is a concern to pierce the ring canvas.” Despite the challenges, Jones enjoys her work and finds it rewarding.

In addition to her work as a ‘ring girl,’ Jones also earns a living as an aesthetics professional, although she does not perform procedures like botox or lip fillings on herself. She mentioned that using an agency can provide access to more prominent fights, but it also means facing intense competition and surrendering a significant portion of her earnings to her agent. Jones stated, “If you use an agency, you may reach the most important fights, but there is a lot of competition. And, of course, your agent stays with a large part of your money.”
