Big decisions are looming for Team India as they gear up to face England in a 5-test match series starting June 20, 2025, at Headingley, Leeds. The team’s probable playing 11 is under scrutiny.
India’s captain, Shubman Gill, and head coach, Gautam Gambhir, recently addressed the media at the BCCI headquarters. They dropped hints about the team’s composition.
Gambhir praised Karun Nair, saying it’s unfair to judge a player based on just 1-2 test performances. Nair has been in great form, scoring a double century against England Lions and 863 runs in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25.
Nair’s experience could be valuable in England’s challenging conditions. He previously scored a triple century against England in 2016 but was later dropped from the team.
Gill kept the suspense alive regarding the final playing 11. He said the decision would be made after the team reaches England and undergoes a 10-day practice camp.
Some key players’ spots seem secured, though. The series will be Gill’s first as test team captain, and it’ll be interesting to see how the team balances under his leadership.
The number 3 and 4 batting positions are still up for discussion, especially after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from test cricket.
Possible players for the series include Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudarshan, Shubman Gill, Karun Nair, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna.
Gambhir’s comments suggest Nair might get a chance in the first test. The team’s final combination will be decided after the practice camp in England.
