Gautam Gambhir Clarifies on Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma ODI Retirement Plans

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have called it quits on T20 and Test cricket. These two legends will now focus on One-Day Internationals (ODIs). The big question is: will they soon retire from ODIs too? Team India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, was recently asked if Kohli and Sharma would play in the 2027 World Cup. Gambhir’s response sheds light on their ODI future.

In an interview with News 18, Gambhir was asked about Kohli and Sharma’s chances of playing in the 2027 World Cup. He said, “We have the T20 World Cup coming up, a big tournament in itself, scheduled for February-March in India.” Gambhir emphasized that their focus is on the T20 World Cup after the England tour.

Will Kohli and Sharma play in the 2027 World Cup?

Gambhir was questioned about Kohli and Sharma’s participation in the 2027 World Cup. He noted, “The 2027 World Cup is still over two years away. I’ve said this before: if you keep performing well, age becomes just a number.” This statement implies that if Kohli and Sharma continue to perform well in ODIs, they won’t face pressure to retire.

Gambhir also pointed out that retirement decisions are personal and cannot be influenced by coaches or selectors. Kohli and Sharma last played an ODI during the 2025 Champions Trophy. While there’s no official confirmation, Gambhir’s comments suggest that their ODI future depends on their performance. As long as they’re doing well, they’ll likely continue to play.
