Gastão Elias has made it to the round of 16 at the Estoril Open for just the second time in his career, after beating 19-year-old American Learner Tien 5-7, 7-5, 6-4. The win was Elias’ first since 2017, snapping an eight-year drought between victories.
Elias spoke with humor about the long wait. “Was it really that long? I’m happy with the win. I’m sad it took so long, but I’m happy with how I played.” Tien, ranked 69th in the world, is a promising young player. Elias praised his own solid play, despite some errors in the first set. He managed his nerves well and adapted to the conditions.
The 34-year-old Portuguese player said his nerves weren’t about his opponent, but about wanting to perform well on home soil. “I’m nervous because I want to play well, not because of who’s on the other side.” His experience helped him stay calm under pressure.
Elias dismissed concerns about his age. “I’m still here, still competing. I feel good physically, and I was able to keep up with a player 15 years younger.” He’s looking forward to his next match, which could be against a fellow Portuguese player, either Nicolás Jerry or Henrique Rocha. “Both are tough opponents. I lost to Henrique last time, and I think I lost to Jerry too. So, I’ll be looking for revenge either way.”
What’s Next
Elias’ next opponent is yet to be determined, but he’s ready for the challenge. The Estoril Open continues to heat up, with exciting matches on the horizon.
