Bangkok is hosting a major international gaming industry event this week, signaling Thailand’s ambitious drive to transform into a leading game development and business hub in Southeast Asia.
The business-to-business (B2B) zone of gamescom asia x Thailand Game Show opened October 16 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, attracting game developers, publishers, investors, and industry professionals globally.
Thai officials used the platform to outline the nation’s strategy to become a “Global Game Destination.” Asst. Prof. Dr. Nuttapon Nimmanphatcharin, Director General of Thailand’s Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa), stated the country’s game market is valued at over $950 million and is projected to grow 15-20% annually.
He highlighted depa’s ongoing collaboration with the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) and private sector partners to support Thai game developers. This support includes connecting them with funding, fostering talent, and facilitating participation in international events such as Tokyo Game Show and gamescom.
A key future initiative is the proposed Game Industry Promotion Act, which would be the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. The act aims to establish a clear framework, protect consumers, and ensure sustainable industry growth.
Kittipong Pruksaroon, President of the Thai Game Software Association (TGA), underscored the nation’s strategic shift from a “player nation” to a “creator nation.” Thailand currently boasts over 30 million gamers, who spent approximately $1.1 billion on games last year.
More than 60 Thai game studios are showcasing their work at the event, demonstrating local innovation and readiness for the global stage. Pruksaroon described the show as a significant step in elevating game events within the ASEAN region and positioning Thailand as a true B2B platform for the industry.
The event’s opening included remarks from Lars Janssen and Felix Falk of game, the German Games Industry Association and gamescom organizers, who expressed enthusiasm for the 360-degree event in ASEAN. They noted the bright future for the region’s game industry.
Day one highlights included a speech by legendary game director Glen Schofield, known for “Dead Space” and “Call of Duty.” He shared insights on fostering creativity under pressure. A special panel discussion, “10 Years of Siege,” featured Alexander Karpazis, Creative Director at Ubisoft, discussing the evolution of “Rainbow Six Siege.”
The B2B zone, running through October 17, features four discussion stages, keynote speeches from international industry figures, a pitch competition, and networking opportunities.
This business focus aligns with the Asia-Pacific game market’s substantial value, which reached $136 billion in 2023 and is expected to continue its growth trajectory. The public exhibition of gamescom asia x Thailand Game Show is scheduled from October 17-19.
