A Reddit user, dinospacesloth, shared a heartwarming story about her experience with her late mother in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Five years ago, on Mother’s Day, she visited her mother and brought her Nintendo Switch. She was playing Animal Crossing at the time and showed it to her parents. Her father was immediately hooked and played her character for hours. Before she left, her father bought the game for her mother.
At first, her mother wasn’t interested, but nine days later, a character created by her mother appeared on her island. The character was dressed just like her mother, so she knew it was her. From then on, her mother played the game almost every day, often just popping in to say hello.
The game brought them closer together. They would talk while playing, and their AirPods would often run out of battery. She would tease her mother’s character, Candy, but her mother didn’t mind and kept giving Candy gifts.
Her mother eventually completed all the Nook Miles challenges and then created a new character that looked like her brother. Her family has probably played the game for over 6,000 hours in total, with her mother alone playing over 2,000 hours.
A Lasting Legacy
Although her mother is no longer with her, the happy memories they created in the game will live on. The story was shared on the r/AnimalCrossing subreddit, where it was met with an outpouring of support and condolences from other players who have experienced similar losses.
The image of her mother’s character remains a poignant reminder of the bond they shared through the game.
