A symbolic invitation for a symbolic date. On the occasion of the celebrations of May 8, marking the capitulation of Nazi Germany in 1945, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will participate in a virtual meeting of the G7, devoted to the war in Ukraine.
“May 8 is a historic date marking the end of the Second World War in Europe which brought terror, destruction and death to Europe,” spokeswoman Christiane Hoffmann said at a regular press conference, considering that with the current war in Ukraine “the cohesion of the G7 is more important than ever”. This is the third meeting of the G7, currently chaired by Germany, since the beginning of the year.
US President Joe Biden had already announced a meeting this week of the G7 group, without giving a specific date, about possible additional sanctions against Russia. “We are always open to additional sanctions,” he said Wednesday at the White House, adding that he would discuss with G7 members “about what we will and will not do. The group of wealthy G7 countries includes Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Britain, Italy and Japan.
