An online meeting of the G20, one of the world’s 20 strongest economies, was held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Italy, which agreed to provide more funding to Afghanistan but considered other options instead of funding the Taliban.
Ahead of the meeting, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement that the war-torn country’s economy, now under Taliban control, was on the brink of humanitarian catastrophe.
“If we do not help the Afghan people deal with the situation, it will soon come at a heavy price, not only for Afghanistan but for the whole world,” he said.
Antonio Guterres added that Afghans do not have jobs and food to eat, which will cause more and more Afghans to flee their country and move to other areas.
During the summit, the European Union announced a ارب 1.15 billion aid package to save Afghanistan from a major humanitarian and socio-economic catastrophe.
More than 5 million Afghans have been displaced by fighting this year alone, according to the latest UN figures. About 17 million Afghans are malnourished and half of the children under the age of five do not have access to adequate food.
