From Miami they send to Haiti aid valued at 5.8 million dollars

An aid shipment worth $ 5.8 million is already on its way to Haiti aboard a container ship that left Miami on Wednesday night, local media reported.

The non-governmental organization Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) is behind the shipment of 501 containers loaded with aid donated by individuals, companies and institutions.

"What goes on this ship will fill 70 trucks"Michael Capponi, president of GEM, told the local CBS channel that he is developing a mission on the ground in Haiti.

Among the materials sent are 14,000 tarps and some 20,000 tents that will help alleviate homelessness in a country where some 130,000 houses have been destroyed, Capponi said.

Haiti, the poorest country in America, with a per capita income of 1,176.8 dollars in 2020, according to World Bank data, suffered an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 last August, which caused the death of more than 2,000 people. some 12,000 injured and enormous destruction from which the schools were not spared.

According to UNICEF estimates, 230,000 children are at risk of dropping out of school in that country, a situation that would make them more vulnerable to exploitation, forced migration or the danger of being recruited by armed gangs.

The country has not yet fully recovered from the catastrophe caused by the earthquake of January 12, 2010, which caused between 200,000 and 300,000 deaths, according to different sources, a higher number of injuries and around one and a half million victims.
