From Benzan to Jokic to seventh in Santiago

Katie Benzan, a 5-6 3-pointer with a Dominican father, made her WNBA debut Sunday night with the Washington Mystics.

After an outstanding career at the University of Maryland, she was not selected in the draft for new talent, but she impressed in practice as a guest and managed to stay on the team.

Her two minutes of action and her attendance go down in history as the first participation of a Dominican in the United States women’s league.

It would be important for the Dominican Basketball Federation (Fedombal) to assess their availability to be part of the national team.

And there is also Esmery Martínez, the native of Hato Mayor who will now be with the University of Arizona after shining with West Virginia in the NCAA.

On the other hand, it is anticipated that Nikola Jokic will be announced this week as the winner of the NBA MVP award for the second consecutive season.

Gregg Popovich once defined him as a “seven-foot Larry Bird” for his leisurely manner, apparently slow to play, but very effective. To his offense, rebounding and ease of passing, this time he added a big upgrade on the defensive end for the Denver Nuggets.

He joins great names in history who have repeated the award from Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul Jabbar to Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, LeBron James, Michael Jordan, among others.

And for this Wednesday the seventh and decisive match of the final series of the superior basketball of Santiago between the GUG and Plaza Valerio clubs will take place. It is the third time they have collided in the final stage and all three have gone to the maximum. In the first two, Plaza Valerio emerged victorious.

What is aspired to is that the decision is in the hands of the players. Santiago’s basketball has experienced a rebirth with great attendance in the final part and the ghost of indecency is not wanted to appear again at the Oscar Gobaira Arena.

There have been no events to regret in the course of the season. I hope that everything ends in peace and that the team that best executes on the field wins.
