French soldier found dead in hotel room in Romania

A French soldier was found dead in his hotel room on Sunday in Bucharest, Romania, where France is the framework nation for a NATO mission. Her body was discovered by a maid and an investigation has been opened, police said. Local media, citing police sources, say the 41-year-old was found with a chisel stuck in his neck and there was no evidence of a break and enter.

The same sources indicate that he had checked in with other French soldiers on Thursday at the hotel, where he was to stay until January 3. France is leading a mission in Romania launched in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, aiming to strengthen the defense of NATO’s eastern flank over time. French soldiers are mainly deployed at the Cincu base in the center of the country, where French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu visited this week. Contacted by AFP, the staff was unable to comment on the information on Sunday.
