French Polynesia: Papeete hospital is overwhelmed

Since the end of July, the archipelago has been facing a constant increase in the number of daily cases of coronavirus, in particular because of the Delta variant.

At the hospital in Papeete, capital of French Polynesia, located on the island of Tahiti, the capacity has been doubled to cope with the lookout for patients, to the detriment of the operation of other services.

With the only intensive care unit in Polynesia, the hospital has struggled to increase its number of beds, from 24 places to 49 places.

The hall of the building has even been requisitioned, but due to lack of personnel, the beds placed there must remain empty.

Patients requiring intensive care cannot be taken care of due to lack of space. To support the archipelago, nearly a hundred reservists left France this week.

Reinforcements that remain insufficient according to the director of the Papeete hospital center.
