French Inmate Escapes Corbas Prison by Hiding in Cellmate’s Luggage

French prisoner escapes, hides in departing friend's luggage

French prison authorities have launched an investigation. A male prisoner managed to escape by hiding in a fellow inmate’s luggage. This happened as the other inmate was leaving the prison after serving his time.

The 20-year-old prisoner slipped out of Corbas prison. This facility is located near Lyon, in southeast France. The escape happened on Friday, July 11, according to BFMTV television reports.

Prison officials stated the inmate was serving a sentence for various crimes. They said he “took advantage of a fellow prisoner’s release” to conceal himself in a suitcase and make his getaway. Sources close to the case told the AFP news agency that the escaped prisoner was also under investigation for connections to organized crime.

French prison administration quickly began an internal inquiry. Meanwhile, Lyon prosecutors opened a legal investigation. They are looking into the escape as part of a possible conspiracy and criminal act.

This unusual escape shines a bright light on issues within the French prison system, especially overcrowding. The Lyon Lawyers’ Association had previously expressed concerns about conditions at the Lyon-Corbas prison. BFMTV reported that as of May 1, 2025, the prison was holding around 1,200 inmates. Its official capacity is only 678 people.

This incident also brings to mind other high-profile escapes in France. Reuters reported that last year, a prisoner known as Mohammed Amra, or “The Fly,” got away during a transfer. Gunmen ambushed his convoy in northern Normandy. Amra was later recaptured in Romania this past February.
