French Cyclist Arrested at Russian Border, Lisbon-Vladivostok Record Bid Halted

Sofiane Sehili is a bikepacking specialist

Sofiane Sehili set out from Lisbon on July 1st. He was on a solo bicycle journey, aiming for Vladivostok. This city sits in Russia’s Far East, near the borders of China and North Korea. His big goal was to break a world record. He wanted to beat the time of 64 days and two hours, set by German cyclist Jonas Deichmann in 2017. Sehili, a 44-year-old French bikepacking expert, rode without any outside help for 17,600 kilometers.

His incredible ride came to a sudden halt in early September. Russian authorities arrested him, claiming he tried to enter the country illegally. He was just about 200 kilometers shy of his finish line. Imagine pedaling that far, only to be stopped so close to your dream. It’s a tough pill to swallow for any athlete.

Just hours after his arrest, Sofiane Sehili posted an update on Instagram. He shared that he was detained at a border crossing between two countries. He also sadly admitted that his record attempt was over. “Failing so close to the finish line is heartbreaking,” he wrote. He now has ten months to decide if he will try again, or if this epic journey will always be an unfinished story.

The trouble wasn’t a lack of paperwork. Sehili held a valid electronic Russian visa. The problem was his chosen method of crossing. He tried to enter Russia from China on his bicycle. However, that specific border point only allows passage by train or bus. Vladimir Naïdine, an official from a public prison control commission, confirmed this to the French press.

Now, the French consulate in Moscow is working to secure the cyclist’s release. It’s a bitter end for a journey that spanned continents and pushed the limits of human endurance. Sehili’s story is a sharp reminder that even the most prepared adventurers can hit unexpected bumps in the road, sometimes caused by a simple rule.
