A good year ago in October, Electronic Arts announced a new “The Sims” game, which is currently known as “Project Rene”. The successor to “The Sims 4” should therefore be playable alone and in multiplayer. Publisher Electronic Arts has now made a welcome decision: “The Sims 5” will be offered as a free download. According to Lyndsay Pearson, responsible for the brand at developer Maxis Studios, the title is “free-to-enter”. This means that “The Sims 5” can be downloaded and played for free.

Play with friends for free
As soon as the title is finished, anyone interested can download “The Sims 5” free of charge. A monthly subscription is also not necessary. EA justifies this step by saying that it should be easy for players to invite friends to a game without a participant having to buy “The Sims 5”. The development was adapted to this requirement. There will therefore be several phases, from closed test runs to large beta tests for all interested players.
Base game as a free download
In contrast to “The Sims 4”, which was released largely completely in 2014 and has since then been provided with new content, “The Sims 5” would only mature into a fully-fledged game over time. However, they are working on a strong basis for the start and new experiences will only be added later.
Follow-up costs
However, the new “Sims” part will not be completely free: EA wants to continue to bring money into its own coffers with regularly released expansions. “Sims 5”, which is planned as a free download, is intended to remove the financial barriers to entry. EA wants to continue to support the classic “The Sims 4”. However, the publisher left it open exactly when a release of “The Sims 5” could be expected.
