Frederico Alvarenga 51st in Kayak Cross Time Trial at Canoe Slalom Worlds

The Canoe Slalom World Championships kicked off this week in Penrith, Australia. This venue holds a special place in sports history. It famously hosted the Olympic events back in Sydney 2000. The championships continue until Saturday, promising more thrilling races.

Frederico Alvarenga finishes 51st in the kayak cross time trial at the Canoe Slalom World Championships

Monday brought the individual kayak cross time trial. Three Portuguese athletes took to the water, aiming for a strong start. Frederico Alvarenga led the Portuguese effort. He finished in 51st place. He clocked in 9.22 seconds behind Spain’s David Llorente, who was crowned champion.

Unfortunately, Alvarenga did not move past the first round. His run took 64.53 seconds. João Cunha also struggled to advance. He placed 54th, clocking 65.02 seconds. This was 9.80 seconds behind the fastest time. Lucas Jacob rounded out the Portuguese team’s results. He finished 67th with a time of 79.68 seconds. That placed him 15.47 seconds off the top spot.

The men’s title went to Spain’s David Llorente. He completed the course in a blistering 55.21 seconds. Great Britain’s Joseph Clarke claimed second place. He was 1.12 seconds behind Llorente. Jakub Krejci from the Czech Republic took third. He finished 1.68 seconds off the winning pace.

In the women’s individual kayak cross time trial, Switzerland’s Alena Marx stood victorious. She finished her run in 62.09 seconds. Anja Novak of Slovenia earned second place. She was 0.98 seconds behind Marx. Brazil’s Ana Satila secured the third spot. She finished 1.14 seconds behind the winner.

The Portuguese trio will not stay down for long. They have more races ahead this week. Their next chance to compete is on Wednesday. They will take part in the kayak slalom qualifiers. The K1 patrol final is also scheduled for that day. All eyes will be on Penrith to see who else makes their mark.
