Francisco Cerúndolo, unstoppable: he is in the semifinals of the Miami Masters

Francisco Cerúndolo does not wake up. The number 103 in the ATP world ranking qualified this Wednesday for the semifinals of the Masters 1000 in Miami, United States, by beating the Italian Jannik Sinner (11th) 4-1 and leaving.

“Fran”, 23, thus became the first Argentine to get into the top four of this fast surface contest since Juan Martín del Potro did it in 2018. He is also the first to go so far in his debut in a Masters 1000, while the victory will allow him to climb to 51st place in the ranking.

“I’m happy, it’s incredible,” he said just after the match against Sinner, who had to withdraw due to blisters on his feet.

After the meeting, Cerúndolo received congratulations on-site of the legendary Gabriela Sabatini, who took a photo with him and posted it on their networks along with “Vamos Francisco Cerúndolo”.

The Argentine had beaten the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoir (57th), the American Reilly Opelka (18th), the talented Frenchman Gael Monfils (24th) and the local Frances Tiafoe (31st).

His next rival will be the winner of the match between the German Alexander Zverev (4th), second favorite for the title, and the Norwegian Casper Ruud (8th), champion this year of the Argentina Open.

The quarterfinals of the men’s draw will close this Thursday with the crosses between the Russian Daniil Medvedev (2nd), top favorite for the title, against the current champion, the Polish Hubert Hurkacz (10th); and the ascending Spanish Carlos Alcaraz (16th) against the Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic (48th).

With Swiatek as a favorite

The tournament is played in parallel with that of the WTA, whose exclusive candidate for the title is the Polish Iga Swiatek (2nd), champion 10 days ago in Indian Wells and who will be the new number one in the world from the 4th of April.

Swiatek, 20, will play her quarterfinal match against the Czech Patra Kvitova (32). The first three semifinalists are already defined: the Swiss Belinda Bencic (28th) and the Japanese Naomi Osaka (77th); and the local Jessica Pegula (21st), who curiously beat the Spanish Paula Badosa this Wednesday with the same result as Cerúndolo: 4-1 and abandoned.
