Talk about a comeback! The doubles court in Gstaad, Switzerland, saw some real drama on Sunday. Portugal’s Francisco Cabral, teamed up with Austrian Lucas Miedler, pulled off an impressive victory. They clinched the ATP 250 Gstaad doubles title after a nail-biting match.
The final was far from straightforward for the top-ranked Portuguese doubles player and his partner. Cabral, currently ranked 44th in the world, and Miedler, at 45th, faced a tough challenge. They were up against the third-seeded duo of Hendrik Jebens from Germany and Albano Olivetti from France.
The first set went right down to the wire. Jebens and Olivetti managed to edge out Cabral and Miedler in a tie-break, winning 7-4. But the unseeded pair didn’t give up. They fought back hard in the second set, forcing another tie-break. This time, Cabral and Miedler held their nerve, taking it 7-4. That pushed the match to a decisive super tie-break. They showed their class there, dominating 10-3 to secure the trophy. This marked their first ATP title together as a team.
For 28-year-old Francisco Cabral, this win is a significant milestone. It’s his third career ATP title. He already knows the feeling of winning in Gstaad, having claimed the doubles title here in 2022. That same year, he also won the Estoril Open. This latest victory is expected to boost his ranking even further. He’s projected to reach a new career-high of 37th in the world when the updated rankings are released on Monday.
