New Prison in the Amazon
France is building a high-security jail in the Amazon. It’s for drug lords and crime bosses.
The jail will be in French Guiana, a area of France in South America. French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin announced the plan. He said the new prison will hold people involved in the drug trade.
The project costs 400 million euros. It should open in early 2028. The prison will be in a remote area of the Amazon. It can hold up to 500 prisoners. There’s a special wing for the most dangerous ones.
This comes after violence in France. Prison guards were targeted by gangs. The new prison will be run tightly. Rules are designed to control even the most dangerous prisoners.
French Guiana is far from France. This means prisoners can’t contact their crime networks. The area has around 292,000 people. They can vote in French elections and use the French social security system.
The new prison is a response to gang violence. It’s a way to keep dangerous prisoners away from their networks. The French government hopes this will make a difference.
