FPF, Football Stars Launch Firefighter Wildfire Support Campaign

The smoke from wildfires often paints a grim picture across the land. But amidst the struggle, the world of Portuguese football is stepping up, showing its heart goes beyond the playing field. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) just launched a major aid effort called ‘Portugal Conta Connosco’ (Portugal Counts on Us). This campaign, partnered with Record, aims to support the brave firefighters who risk their lives daily battling these devastating blazes.

Pedro Proença, the FPF president, didn’t mince words. He believes part of football’s job is to give back to the community that supports it. Fighting these fires is a truly unfair game, he noted, but that doesn’t mean standing by and doing nothing. The FPF promises to get everyone involved: players, coaches, club leaders, and referees. He stressed that this fight needs everyone. These are the crucial times to step up and say, “We are here.”

António Nunes, who leads the Portuguese League of Firefighters, spoke plainly about the tough situation. He expressed gratitude for the FPF’s help. He explained that these donations would “fill some gaps” for the fire brigades. This is especially true for things like new vehicles and personal protective gear. He added that government funds simply don’t cover 100% of their costs.

Nunes acknowledged that many people think the government should take care of everything first. While it’s true that volunteer firefighters couldn’t exist without state and local council support, he said society often shows the true spirit of Portuguese people when times are really tough.

The launch event was held at Football City, a place usually bustling with training and strategy. On this particular day, it transformed into a call center. Famous faces from football history manned the phones, taking calls for the cause. The list of stars included Costinha, Domingos Paciência, Nélson, Cândido Costa, Alan, Marco Caneira, Jorge Andrade, Matilde Fidalgo, André Almeida, Beto, and Helena Costa.

Former player Costinha highlighted football’s long history of helping out good causes. He spoke movingly about the “heroes” who endure so much. They leave their families, who often see them go but don’t always see them come home. It’s a heavy thought.

National team coach Roberto Martínez was also there, stressing the campaign’s importance. He called the firefighters courageous and tough. He noted that, sadly, their efforts are not always recognized as they should be. Martínez shared his strong belief in the link between the Portuguese people and football. He stated confidently, “I believe they will help a lot.”

This important campaign will run until October 11th. That’s the day Portugal faces Ireland in a European Championship qualifier match at Alvalade. A portion of the money made from that game will go directly to support the firefighters.
