Facts described as “extremely upsetting” by Commander Ade Adelekan, of the London police. Thursday evening, a stampede at the entrance to a concert in the O2 Academy room left several injured, four of whom are still hospitalized in critical condition this Friday morning. London police were called at 9.35pm after reports that a “large number of people were trying to break into” the venue in the Brixton area. A total of eight people were taken to hospital, Scotland Yard said.
Once there, the emergency services found a number of people with injuries attributed to the stampede. Two people with less serious injuries were treated at the scene.
No arrest
An “urgent investigation has been opened”, added the police and a security cordon was deployed around the performance hall, which hosted a concert by Nigerian Afrobeat singer Asake on Thursday evening. The findings are continuing on the spot, according to the police, adding that no arrests had been made.
Ade Adelekan urged to use good judgment in videos shared on social media. “Where force has been used by police officers, these officers know they must be held accountable for their actions,” he added, stating in response to a “widely shared” video, that “no police dog” was used. The police have appealed for witnesses.
