Four migrants die in road accident in southern Mexico

Cuatro migrantes mueren en accidente carretero al sur de México

Four migrants were killed and 16 others were injured in a road accident on Saturday night in the state of Chiapas, in southern Mexico, authorities reported this Sunday.

The accident occurred near the municipality of San Juan Chamula, on a road used by human traffickers to avoid immigration checks. The migrants were traveling in a pickup truck.

"At the scene of the events there were four males without vital signs and preliminary 16 people of different nationalities were injured, the prosecution said in a statement.

The authority stated that of the wounded, 9 are from Honduras, 4 from Guatemalaone from Ecuador, one from Nicaragua and another person who entered the hospital as an unknown person.

Nevertheless, He did not detail the nationalities of the deceased.

"The prosecutor of the Investigative Public Ministry is carrying out the corresponding procedures"he added.

Dozens of migrants from Central America and other countries cross Mexico daily with the intention of reaching the United States. However, along the way they are exposed to accidents and to being victims of organized crime or Mexican immigration authorities themselves. 

On December 9, a trailer carrying 160 migrants crashed into a pedestrian bridge in Chiapas, leaving 56 dead.

Another recent tragic episode occurred on April 20 when a truck with Central American migrants fell from a bridge in the state of Veracruz (east), causing the death of a Nicaraguan woman.
