Formula 1: Verstappen was fastest on water

Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) achieved first place in the standings this Saturday to start at the top in the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix, after a session conditioned by rain at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

The great surprise of the day was provided by the British George Russell (Williams), who took second place. The third time of the day was the British Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), leader of the Drivers’ World Championship, who this Sunday will seek his 100th victory in the category. Australian Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren) completed the second row in fourth place, ahead of German Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) and Frenchman Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri).

Product of the water on the track, the British Lando Norris (McLaren) lost control of his car in a curve and hit the retaining walls without physical consequences. After a 40-minute hiatus, which took parts of the wrecked car to be removed, Russell turned again at an excellent level and secured second place, marking his best F1 qualifying record with Williams.

The Briton was second last year Sakhir but with Mercedes – he would listen to which he may arrive next season – replacing Hamilton, who had been out of Covid-19. The Belgian Grand Prix, twelfth date of the year, will be run on Sunday from 10am in Argentina with ESPN broadcast.
