Former police officer Derek Chauvin, convicted of the death of George Floyd in the US state of Minneapolis, was stabbed to death this Friday at the Federal Correctional Institute in the city of Tucson, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Chauvin is in stable condition. At around 12:30 p.m. (local time), “an incarcerated individual,” who two sources consulted with CNN said was Chauvin, was attacked at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Tucson, Arizona, the office reported in a statement.
“Responding staff took action to save the life of an incarcerated individual,” and he was transported to a local hospital for treatment, the statement said, adding that “no staff members were injured in the incident.”
Chauvin is currently serving a concurrent sentence of 22.5 years for second- and third-degree murder and another of more than 20 years for violating George Floyd’s federal civil rights when he pressed his knee on the African-American citizen’s neck in an attempt to kill him experienced more than nine minutes, which led to his death.
