It is rare to hear a former competitor praise a rival so highly. Yet, when it comes to connecting with players, Nintendo stands in a league of its own. This isn’t just fan talk. Even a past leader from Sony’s PlayStation division openly acknowledges Nintendo’s special touch.
Shawn Layden, who once led PlayStation, shared his thoughts in an interview with the YouTube channel HipHopGamer. The discussion turned to a hypothetical question: what would he do if he were in a top role at Nintendo? His answer was clear. Nintendo’s commitment to its work is deep, but above all, they put players first. They always seem to know what their fans really want.
“No game company cares for players as much as Nintendo,” Layden stated during the chat, which was also highlighted by GamesRadar. He went on to say that even PlayStation never quite reached that level of connection with its fanbase. Nintendo has a unique talent for understanding player desires. He pointed to the recent global health crisis as an example. When people were stuck at home, gaming saw a huge spike in revenue. Many companies rushed to hire more staff, thinking the boom would last forever. They went “all out, full steam ahead,” as Layden put it.

However, life slowly returned to normal. People started going out more and playing fewer games. This shift created a domino effect across the industry. Many game companies faced tough choices, leading to workforce reductions. Yet, Nintendo remained steady. They stuck to their long-term vision and continued to lead the pack.
“Nintendo actually knew it would end this way,” Layden continued. This foresight meant they were uniquely positioned. They kept moving forward with their established plans, avoiding the painful losses many other companies experienced during the downturn. Layden believes Nintendo sees their own opportunities with unmatched clarity. They understand the market and their place in it better than anyone, and their actions consistently prove it.
Layden concluded his thoughts with a humble admission about Nintendo’s unique path. “If I had to go in there, I would have backed out,” he said, underscoring the singular success of Nintendo’s unwavering approach.
