Former NFL running back Doug Martin reportedly died on Saturday, October 18, while in police custody following an alleged home invasion and medical emergency. Martin, 36, was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Authorities responded to reports of a home invasion shortly after 4:15 a.m. local time in East Oakland. Police were simultaneously informed that the alleged burglar was experiencing a “medical emergency.”
A “brief struggle” occurred when officers made contact with the suspect. The individual became unresponsive after being taken into custody, according to police.
First responders provided medical attention before the person was transported to a hospital. The individual later died there.
The Oakland Police Department has not officially identified Martin as the deceased or released an official cause of death. However, multiple outlets have reported his identity.
Police officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure under department policy. The investigation into Martin’s death remains ongoing.
News of Martin’s passing initially surfaced on Sunday, October 19. His family released a statement to Fox Sports.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” the statement read. “The cause of death is not yet confirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Martin’s former team, also paid tribute to him on Sunday. “Rest in Peace, Doug Martin,” they shared on social media.
The team’s statement continued, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin. From his historic 2012 rookie season to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug left an indelible mark on our franchise.”
“He was a fan favorite during his time in Tampa Bay and was recognized as one of the 50 greatest Buccaneers of all time for his numerous achievements,” the statement concluded. “We extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and all those whom Doug touched throughout his life.”
Other former NFL players also remembered Martin. Trai Essex wrote on X, “RIP Doug Martin. 36 years young. Seems like a lot of young, recently retired players are passing away lately. Brothers, take care of yourselves and make sure you’re checking in with your brothers. This goes for everyone, not just athletes. Deeply praying for the Martin family.”
Martin was a first-round draft pick for the Buccaneers in 2012, selected 31st overall. He had an impressive rookie season, rushing for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also caught 49 passes for 472 yards, earning him Pro Bowl honors.
His rookie year saw him achieve the third-most scrimmage yards in NFL history for a first-year player. He followed this with an All-Pro season in 2015, where he ran for 1,402 yards and six touchdowns.
Nicknamed “Muscle Hamster” for his powerful running style despite his 5-foot-9 frame, Martin was suspended for four games by the NFL in 2016. He was released by the Buccaneers after six seasons.
He concluded his NFL career with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2018.
Before the NFL, Martin played college football at Boise State from 2007 to 2011. He was a two-time first-team conference selection.
During his college career, he rushed for over 3,400 yards, averaging 5.5 yards per carry, and scored 43 touchdowns. He was named MVP of the Maaco Las Vegas Bowl in 2011.
Boise State also honored Martin, sharing a tribute that read, “In Memoriam Doug Martin. 1989-2025. Boise State Football 2007-2011. Rest in peace, Broncos legend. You will be missed.”
