Former first lady sentenced to prison

A Honduran court on Wednesday sentenced the former first lady of Honduras, Rosa Elena Bonilla de Lobo, to 14 years and one month in prison for the crimes of fraud and misappropriation.

“The sentence was notified to the parties,” Judiciary spokesman Carlos Silva told The Associated Press. Bonilla de Lobo will also have to pay a fine of 13.8 million lempiras (more than 563,500 dollars).

This is the second time that Bonilla de Lobo has been convicted of corruption offenses in the same case. The first time she received a sentence of 58 years in prison, but the sentence was annulled due to inconsistencies in the process and the trial was ordered to be repeated.

She is the wife of former President Porfirio Lobo Sosa (2010-2014), who was banned from entering its territory by the United States for allegedly accepting bribes from drug traffickers in exchange for political favors.

Bonilla de Lobo has been in a women’s prison since March. She requested on several occasions a change of measures other than prison, but they were denied.
