Former baseball player Mario Guerrero dies

This Sunday morning, The family of the Leones del Escogido mourned the death of shortstop Mario Guerrero, at 73 years old.

Guerrero, whose number 11 is retired by the Chosen One, has been a member of the Lions since the season of 1970-71 to 1979-80 and was the batting leader with .365 in the 1976-77 tournament.

With the scarlets he participated in 316 regular series games and averaged .294 for life, with 352 hits, 52 doubles, 106 RBIs, 131 runs scored, .338 on-base percentage and 1 home run.

His strikeout rate (69) relative to his at-bats (1,325) it is one of the best in the history of the Professional Baseball League of the Dominican Republic.

Guerrero was one of the favorites of the fans of El Escogido during the 70s, due to his great identification with the red shirt and his total dedication on the pitch.

During his career at Lidom, Guerrero he also uniformed with the Tigres del Licey (1968 to 1970 and in the 1980-81 tournament) and in his last campaign with the Azucareros del Este (1984-85).

The Chosen One arrived from the Licey on November 12, 1970, in exchange for Rafael Robles.

In the U.S He was the 31st Dominican to debut in the Major Leagues and he did it on April 8, 1973 with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park against the New York Yankees.
