Former Norway and Denmark national team coach Age Hareide is undergoing treatment for brain cancer, his family confirmed, even as he recently attended a pivotal match where Norway secured a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
His son, Bendik Hareide, revealed the 72-year-old’s diagnosis to Norwegian broadcaster NRK. Hareide has already undergone sessions of radiation and chemotherapy.
Despite the severity of his illness, Hareide traveled to Milan to witness Norway’s 4-1 victory over Italy. This result allowed the Nordic team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
The first indications of the disease emerged in July, according to his son. At that time, Age Hareide began experiencing difficulties with his speech.
Hareide has had a distinguished career in football. He represented Norway 50 times as a central defender, playing for clubs such as Manchester City and Norwich.
He is perhaps best known for his coaching achievements. He managed Norway until 2008, led Denmark to the Round of 16 at the 2018 World Cup, and also coached Iceland before retiring.
At the club level, Hareide secured national titles in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. He coached prominent teams including Rosenborg, Bröndby, Helsingborgs, and Malmö.
With Malmö, Hareide led the team in the Champions League during the 2014/15 season. This marked the last time a Swedish club participated in the main phase of the competition.
