A quiet town in Cerro Largo found itself in the spotlight recently. Five people were arrested in NoblĂa, linked to a case about irregular driving licenses. This investigation has stirred up the community.
Prosecutor Leticia Sequeira is currently questioning those arrested. Four women and one man are involved. Three of these individuals work for the local government in NoblĂa. The other two are a couple from the city, being investigated as private citizens.
The probe didn’t stop in NoblĂa. Law enforcement also searched municipal offices in Aceguá and Fraile Muerto. This suggests the problem might be bigger than just one town.
Christian Morel, who leads Cerro Largo’s government, spoke openly about the situation. He believes this is “a network operating in this way.” He promised full cooperation with the prosecutor’s office. “Justice won’t lack anything we have,” he stated. Morel also clarified that his administration was not involved in the alleged scheme. “We were not part of the government that did this,” he said. “Our role is just to provide all papers and documents.”
Morel made it clear that he would act decisively based on what the justice system finds. “We will act on what Justice decides,” he insisted. He outlined strict consequences for anyone found guilty. If permanent staff are charged, they will face disciplinary action. Anyone on a contract found to be involved will see their agreement terminated. “I will not back down for a second on making these decisions,” he stressed.
The mayor also spoke about Fabio Freire. Freire is the former mayor of NoblĂa. He now serves as the director of the Municipal Police. Morel stated that if Freire is called for questioning and linked to the case, he will have no problem with him leaving his position. The investigation continues to unfold, promising a thorough cleanup.
