According to the entourage of the head of government, he resigns after having been on vacation in recent days while Greece is on a war footing in the face of the fires. The Greek daily Kathimerini claimed in a post titled “As if nothing happened”.

Five dead and 50,000 hectares devastated

Greece has been facing major fires for two weeks, fanned by strong winds and scorching temperatures. The disasters have so far killed five people and ravaged around 50,000 hectares of forest and scrubland.

The departure of Notis Mitarachi comes only one month after the New Democracy (ND) party of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who won the legislative elections, was returned to power. The resigning minister will be replaced by Yannis Oikonomou, a 49-year-old ND deputy, spokesman for the conservative government during the previous legislature.
