A company spokesman said first responders were near the Marathon Petroleum refinery in Garyville, Louisiana, after a chemical leak and storage tank fire were reported.
The spokesman added that the fire broke out on the company’s premises and there were no injuries.
Also, witnesses at the scene reported seeing a large amount of smoke billowing from the site.
Marathon said in a statement: “The chemical spill is contained at the refinery site and there have been no injuries. As a precaution, aerial surveillance was carried out in the community. No off-site impacts were identified. All regulatory reports have been made.”
Authorities are conducting an investigation into the chemical leak and fire.
St. John’s Preparatory Academy was closed because of the fire.
