Italian club Fiorentina has appointed Paolo Vanoli as its new head coach, hoping to reverse a historic Serie A slump that saw the team record its worst start in league history.
Vanoli, 53, takes over immediately for Stefano Pioli, who was dismissed earlier this week.
Pioli’s tenure lasted just four months.
Under Pioli, Fiorentina secured only four points in its opening 10 Serie A matches, placing them last in the standings. This marks the club’s worst-ever start to a Serie A season at this stage.

Vanoli was without a club since July after leaving Torino, where he spent one season.
His previous coaching roles include various Italian national youth teams, Spartak Moscow between 2021 and 2022, and Venezia from 2022 to 2024.
Vanoli’s first match will be against Genoa on Sunday, a team currently in 18th place in the Italian league table.
Fiorentina’s change marks the third coaching alteration in Italy’s top-tier league this season. Juventus previously replaced Igor Tudor with Luciano Spalletti. Genoa replaced Patrick Vieira with Daniele De Rossi.
