Finnish minister defends parties

On the verge of tears, the Finnish Prime Minister, Sanna Marin, defended her right to “joy” and “life” on Wednesday, in response to the controversy caused by some videos in which she appears dancing at a lively party. “I’m a human being. Sometimes I also aspire to joy, light and pleasure in the midst of these dark clouds”, he declared, with a tremulous voice, during an event organized by his formation, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), in Lahti, in the south of Finland.

“This is something private, it is joy and life,” he declared, his eyes misty. “But I haven’t missed a single day of work.”

Last week some videos of the person in charge were leaked online, in which she appears having fun with friends and celebrities and that have generated controversy.

There are those who accuse her of having behaved inappropriately for the position she holds, and others defend her right to enjoy a private event in the company of her friends. In social networks, rumors have spread about a possible consumption of narcotics, something that the prime minister rejected.

To “dispel any suspicion,” Sanna Marin took a drug test last week, which came back negative. “I want to believe that people watch what we do while we work instead of what we do in our free time,” she said Wednesday, admitting that the past week was “pretty tough.”

On Tuesday, Marin again graced the front pages of the newspapers by apologizing.
