Finnish Aapo Rautio “The Angus” Wins Air Guitar World Championship in Oulu

Finnish man shows off exciting moves, wins Air Guitar World Championship 2025

The imaginary shredding and unspoken solos echoed through Oulu, a city in western Finland, last Friday night. Fans cheered loudly as the 28th Air Guitar World Championships reached its grand finale. It was a spectacular show, with contestants from around the globe vying for the ultimate invisible axe title.

This year, the top prize went to a local hero, Aapo Rautio. Known on stage as “The Angus,” this Finnish performer truly captured the hearts of the judges. He outplayed Yuta Sudo from Japan in the final round, claiming the coveted championship. But what does one win in an air guitar contest? A real guitar, of course! Rautio took home a “Flying Finn” model, specially crafted by the famous Finnish luthier, Matti Nevalainen.

The competition brought together passionate performers from 13 different countries. Each contestant had two chances to shine, delivering a 60-second air guitar performance for each song. Judges looked for creativity, raw excitement, and how well each performer expressed themselves artistically on stage. A panel of five experts from the performing arts had the tough job of scoring. While props and costumes were encouraged, the rules were clear: no actual instruments or live backing bands allowed. It’s all about the air, after all.

The Air Guitar World Championships started way back in 1996. Since then, it has become an annual event, drawing people to Oulu each year. The organizers hold onto a unique belief that drives the whole show. They declare, “When everyone in the world plays air guitar, wars will end, global warming will stop, and all bad things will disappear.” It’s a wonderful, hopeful idea behind all the fun. So, this event is more than just a quirky contest. It is truly a festival of peace, creativity, and good vibes. These good feelings spread from the stage to everyone watching around the world.
