Finally it was the Toyota 7

If the 24 Hours of Le Mans is the most prestigious and vibrant event in the WEC, this time it had one more determining factor: the rain. The meteorological situation predicted a rough exit, and so it was. After a launched exit, the Toyota 8, driven by Buemi, crashed into one of the GlickenHaus and was off track. It was Alpine’s opportunity to prevent a new Toyota double, but it was not possible, the trio made up of Conway, Kobayashi and López it got its second consecutive victory of the season. The Toyota 8 (Buemi, Nakajima and Hartley) completed the second double of the season, as happened in Portimao.

When The rain disappeared, the Toyota 8 got back on track and was placed in second position. During the first hours there was an alternation of positions between the two Toyota, but another exit by Buemi left the 7 with the open track and it was seen that it is the strongest car of the moment. It is the Toyota Gazoo Racing 7’s first victory at the La Sarthe circuit.

Both cars of the Japanese brand left us one of the anecdotes of the race. With 10 minutes to go, they did pit stop to share the last minutes of the event and take the walk of victory. Alpine’s # 36 (Negrao, Lapierre and Vaxiviere) closed the podium at Le Mans. With victory, the Toyota 7 leads the World Endurance Championship with 121 points, followed by 8 with 111 and Alpine 36 closed as third with 90.

Antonio García, second in GTE Pro

In the Spanish representation, Antonio García with Corvette Racing achieved a great second place in the LMGTE Pro category. The Madrilenian made a great comeback from the last place in his class, where fought with Miguel Molina for victory. It’s a shame that the one with AF Corse, when it was in an alternation with the other car of the brand, suffered a puncture in the right front wheel and said goodbye to his chances of victory and podium. He finished as fifth classified.

Roberto Merhi, in LMP2, made us dream for the first few hours. After the rough start, the Spaniard placed first in his category, the illusion did not last long when Rui Andrade went off the line and hit the wall. After the accident the # 25 of G-Drive had to abandon the race. He finished 22nd in the standings.

Tragic end for Kubica in LMP2

The category in which the Spaniard participated was one of the most rugged. If at the beginning of the race the rain raged and left Merhi first, a small storm at five hours of competition left us one of the race images. Richard Mille’s # 1, a team driven by three female drivers, had a serious accident with the G-Drive # 26 in which Nyck De Vries was participating. The car driven at that time by Sophia Floersch he was defenestrated and left us an image where the pilot communicated with a mobile phone from the car to make sure he was okay.

Yes that It was one of the images of the day, the last one was the most painful. On the last lap Team WRT # 41, with Robert Kubica at the controls, he was going to take the victory and the double along with # 31, driven by Frijns. The Oreca 07-Gibson stopped completely and left faces of circumstance in the Polish box. Frijns got an unexpected victory and # 41 stayed up off the podium. In the last category, LMGTE Am, the winner was AF Corse car # 83 driven by Perrodo, Nielsen and Rovera.
