Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on Switch 2: Developers Detail 30 FPS, Simplified Mode

Developers of the acclaimed “Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade” are navigating a complex technical challenge to bring the graphically intensive action RPG to Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 console while maintaining visual quality and performance.

Teruki Endo, the game’s Battle Director, confirmed that achieving a stable 30 frames per second (FPS) across all scenes is the primary goal for the Switch 2 port. This target applies to both the new platform and existing ones where the game is available.

To maintain this framerate, engineers are undertaking a delicate balancing act. They are reducing the complexity of post-effect processing and optimizing background elements where necessary.

Crucially, the visual quality of main character models, including their shaders, will not be compromised or reduced. This decision aims to preserve the game’s distinct aesthetic.

The development team is prioritizing a consistent, smooth experience across multiple platforms. As such, the Switch 2 port will not introduce new gameplay mechanics that leverage the console’s unique features, such as gyroscope or touch controls.

Endo also detailed the “Simplified Progression” mode, designed to expand accessibility and cater to diverse playstyles. This mode ensures character stats and gauges remain full.

While reducing strategic depth, developers believe the mode sustains the excitement of action and emotional engagement. It allows story-focused players to progress smoothly and even accelerates combat tempo.

The interview, conducted by BT Blaze Trends, also touched upon the design of the character Yuffie, introduced in the “Episode Intermission” DLC. Yuffie was conceived to push more action-oriented concepts, particularly excelling in aerial combat.

Looking ahead to future installments like “Rebirth,” the team plans to adjust other characters to match Yuffie’s effectiveness, aiming for optimal balance. The philosophy is that every character will remain useful, designed to shine in specific combat scenarios.

A powerful combat feel is created through techniques such as motion timing, hit stop, screen shake, and controller vibration. Endo, with his background in action games, expressed confidence in the robustness of the game’s action system.

For new players, Endo recommends focusing on the unique characters and adjusting Materia settings or equipment if combat proves challenging. He highlighted the handheld mode of the Switch 2 as a key opportunity to reach new audiences.
