The story of Final Fantasy Tactics’ revival is one of determination and perseverance. Fans had been clamoring for Square Enix to re-release the game, but the biggest hurdle was the loss of the original source code. Kazutoyo Maehiro, director of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, shared the challenges of redeveloping the game in an interview on Square Enix’s website. The master data and source code, essential for the game’s creation, had vanished over time.
This wasn’t due to poor data storage in the past, but rather the common practice of overwriting old data with new translations. As a result, the team had to start from scratch, analyzing various versions of the game and building new programming from the ground up. This labor-intensive process paid off, with the new version featuring an improved UI, new voice acting, and refined dialogue, courtesy of Yasumi Matsuno, the original writer and director.
The updated game also includes enhanced systems to boost gameplay quality. Maehiro acknowledged that some fans might think the original game didn’t need any enhancements, but he believed it was crucial to ensure the updated version remained relevant and accessible to new players. The team aimed to strike a balance between preserving the classic game and introducing new elements.
The fruit of their labor, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, is set to release on September 30th for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series S|X, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The game’s rebirth is a testament to the team’s dedication and commitment to delivering a high-quality experience for both old and new fans.
